SORACOM IoT communication platform introduces new "SORACOM Junction" service for inspection and control of IoT device packet data

Enables highly refined inspection, mirroring, and redirection of packet data on IoT networks.

Tokyo – SORACOM, INC., provider of the leading cloud-native communication platform for the Internet of Things, announced today at the SORACOM Discovery conference that the new service, Soracom Junction, will be available worldwide beginning July 5, 2017.

Junction supports inspection, mirroring, and redirection of packets passing through Virtual Private Gateways (VPG) on the SORACOM core network, enabling new use cases including real-time visualization, security enhancement, traffic control, and more.

Junction’s inspection function analyzes packets passing through the VPG and provides application discrimination and reporting of the statistical information. This packet analysis can be used to visualize the communication destinations of IoT devices and identify main access destinations for personal / corporate communication services. Packet statistics information can be sent to the customer’s designated address.

Junction’s mirroring function is effective for early detection of security threats and other network abnormalities. By designating an engine that detects intrusion and warning by traffic analysis, VPG users can protect their IoT devices from threats such as DDoS attacks and device hijacking, and reduce the risk of their devices being compromised in such an attack. This mirroring function can also cooperate with solutions provided by participants in the Soracom Partner Space (SPS). Beginning July 5, “Trend Micro Virtual Network Function Suite (tentative name)” provided by Trend Micro Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “TMVNFS”) will be available for trial, and will include Soracom Junction mirroring.

Junction’s redirection function makes it possible to customize data routing so that a packet passing through the user’s VPG always passes through a specified server.. For example, users can specifying an engine that controls traffic to prioritize sensor data and alerts by narrowing down the bands of file distribution and firmware downloading, or permit only communication of a specific application based on business rules or policy.
