SORACOM Canal private networking now supports AWS VPC inter-region peering
We are super excited to announce today the release of one of the single most-requested features for SORACOM platform. SORACOM Canal, our private networking service, extended feature to support AWS VPC inter-region peering.
SORACOM Canal integrates with AWS Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) peering to create a secure, private connection between your IoT devices and your AWS VPC so your devices and VPC can communicate without going through to the Internet.
Until now, Soracom Canal was only configured in the eu-central-1 (Frankfurt) region for our SORACOM Air for Global service and in ap-northeast-1 (Tokyo) region for SORACOM Air for Japan. With today’s release, devices connected using SORACOM Air SIMs can privately connect to all AWS regions supporting inter-region VPC peering.
Inter-region VPC peering connections are currently supported in all public regions except Asia Pacific (Osaka-Local) and Asia Pacific (Seoul).
VPC Peering Basics
So for example, if you maintain your IoT backend in the us-west-1 (Oregon) region, your IoT devices connected to the cellular network using SORACOM Air can now connect privately to your Oregon AWS VPC environment, or to any AWS region supporting VPC inter-region peering.
Configuration is simple: just select the region of your AWS VPC in your SORACOM Virtual Private Gateway (VPG).
SORACOM Canal addresses critical IoT security concerns by ensuring that devices will never be exposed to the Internet. This is possible because the SORACOM network core is built on top of AWS, allowing secure connection between IoT devices and AWS VPCs without a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or a dedicated line like MPLS.
Together with SORACOM Gate, you can now access your devices anywhere in the world from any AWS region without going through the Internet.
This feature is now available to all SORACOM customers now.
